How many trips to Portugal does an implant treatment need?
Trips and appointments are not the same thing. According to the published statements, an implant treatment falls into two stages with months between them: for the single implant two to three appointments and three months of osseointegration; for the restoration of a jaw one operation and two to three follow-up appointments, with the final prosthesis three to four months later. Osseointegration passes at home. What applies in an individual case depends on a prior individual examination and diagnosis.
Trips are not the same as appointments
The number of appointments and the number of trips are two different numbers, and only the second costs money and leave days. Several appointments can fall in the same trip; between others lie months in which no trip is needed.
This page therefore answers the question about the second number. The first is in the treatment description; the second is what belongs in the calendar and in the cost calculation.
A preliminary remark that belongs here: a trip for treatment is a deliberate decision and nothing else. This page therefore describes only what is needed for the treatment, and says nothing about what else might be combined with such a trip.
One tooth: the operation, and the tooth months later
For the single implant, two to three appointments and three months of osseointegration are stated. Osseointegration is the time in which the bone bonds with the titanium, and according to the published description it passes at home, with no appointments in Portugal.
From this follows the usual structure: a first stage with examination, 3D scan, plan and operation, then the interval, then a second stage. Whether the examination and the operation fall in the same trip is not published; it is among the things to settle by telephone before booking.
For people in the statutory scheme there is a further reason the diagnosis comes first: according to the documented statement, the Heil- und Kostenplan, the treatment and cost plan the fund must approve, has to be approved before the treatment. Without a finding there is no plan, and without a plan nothing to submit.
A whole jaw: the same two stages, for a different reason
For the protocol for a whole jaw, one operation and two to three follow-up appointments are stated. A temporary fixed prosthesis is provided within 24 to 72 hours when the evaluation of the 3D scan confirms the conditions for immediate loading — that is, after a prior individual examination and diagnosis.
The final prosthesis follows, according to the published description, three to four months later. The structure is thus the same as for a single tooth, for a different reason: it is not the wait for the tooth that separates the stages, but the wait for the final restoration.
What differs in the meantime is what someone wears during this time. What else belongs to the process is in the plan that arises from the diagnostic consultation.
Why the second appointment cannot be fixed in advance
Because the finding determines it and not the calendar. A date for the second trip given before the examination is an estimate and not a commitment. Anyone who treats it as a commitment is booking against an uncertainty nobody can resolve.
In practice that means: plan the first trip, place the second roughly, and fix it only after the operation. Flexible bookings cost a little more and in this case usually save money.
The treatment takes place in Porto. According to the documented market statement, there are connections from Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Stuttgart and Berlin to Porto. The diagnostic consultation is booked by telephone, on +351 220 430 090; dental care is provided by the Instituto AreLuna at Rua de Júlio Dinis, 194, 4050-327 Porto.
Frequently asked questions
Is a single trip possible?
That cannot be committed to here. Stated are three months of osseointegration for the single implant and three to four months until the final prosthesis for the restoration of a jaw. What is possible in an individual case follows from a prior individual examination and diagnosis.
How many days does each trip last?
For the stay with the operation the clinic names at least three days: one for the examination, one for the operation and at least one for recovery before the flight home. How many days are needed in your own case, and how long a later trip will be, follows from a prior individual examination and diagnosis.
Does one have to do anything between the two stages?
According to the published description, osseointegration passes at home, with no appointments in Portugal. What follow-up is planned in an individual case is in the treatment plan.
